The Anniversary

Kanchan sat on her porch sipping coffee with her best friend, Mita. It was one of those days when the cool breeze made one shiver for a mere second but the warm sunlight made it feel like a contradiction. It was one of those days when Kanchan looked forward to Mita going home so that she could go to her bedroom and cry alone, or with him. It was one of those days when Kanchan and Mita met up for their regular chats. It was one of those Fridays. And it was one of those anniversaries.

Mita was unusually quiet that day so Kanchan could go back into time and talk about the love of her life. Once more. On the anniversary.

Kanchan had met him during a conference in Chicago. He was overwhelming tall, and looked like a giant to the 5 feet tall Kanchan, and had the warmest brown eyes, overshadowing the crow's feet, she observed. Clad in a black business suit with no wedding ring made him look like the most eligible bachelor to Kanchan who had lived to be a 35-year-old single mother to a 12 year-old daughter.

And soon enough, Kanchan shocked herself by asking him out to a coffee. And sooner than she knew, he shocked her by obliging. Long discussions about educational laws over coffee and socioemotional development over dinner, soon turned into longer days of companionship and longer nights of romance and love making.

The day Kanchan's daughter went off to college, he proposed to her, like how she had always imagined since she was a little girl. Man down on one knee, flowers, a solitaire, tears, kisses, and a promise. The next month, they wed. It was a small ceremony with close family and friends. Some were happy and some not. Some felt like it was a perfect match and some felt that his dyed hair did not disguise his age. Some felt that Kanchan could have married someone younger while some felt that his age was not a barrier.

The same night, he suffered a stroke. He lost movement in his limbs, and his short-term memory.

Today was the anniversary of that dreaded day 15 years ago.

Today, she was his care-taker.

is this a true story/?

You do have a knack to tell stories. I really like the way you tell your tales in the form of a short story... and leave the reader with a emotion of sympathy for a while...like.. "Ah! this should not have happened after all this..." [Types]

Life at times certainly doesnot come out the way we intend to paint... lines do get smudgy and color do tend to look different on the paper..than we thought it would look when we imagin.

But the end product is always unique, beautiful and colorful in its own way. =)

The story you told just now is exactly what had happened to one my uncle... after all the struggle ...they have a boy after the paralysis and are living happily togather.... and its a true inspirational story to me...

I'm sorry if I spilled my words over the edge... but I really feel you are a gifted writer and hope to read more of you. But more of inspirational ones.... Life is not all black or blue or sap green... sometimes its pretty pink and sunshine yellow too =)

wow!!!!this was my exact point at cosmicjoys latest post....check it out....

its life!!!!! the unknown and unseen creep up unknowingly...

Solitaire said...

@ Veens, Yeah I know. :(

@ Alameen, nope!!

@ Neetal, thanks! Are you an artist?

This story is purely fictional so it is a mere coincidence that it is similar to your uncle's.

Keep visiting. And just as an artist chooses what color he/she wants to use in his painting, I choose to dabble with black or blue. I leave pink and yellow to Danielle Steele.

@ Ceedy, yeah! no matter what we dream about or plan towards, sometimes life just happens.

Neetal said...

@ Solitaire : hahaha Danielle Steele... Yeah that true... well you are right... I do love to paint...for me its the only thing which keeps me off from the crazy world...

And Black and Blue are very important color my friend ! To define and to give shadow/soul to a painting... may be in life... one does need bit of Black and blue to accentuate other colors =)

Glad to have found your blog... will visit again...and hope to hear more of you through your blog =)

A story Very Well Told... But leaves me with an emotion beyond sad..Just that void feeling, when u don't want to say anything...n makes me say "Life is a Bitch!" !!!

PS : did u write this on the same day as the Hum Tum post??

Solitaire said...

@ Divya, thank you! :)

@ D sinner, thank you!!!

@ Pavi, and some people are just ill-fated, I suppose. And yes, I did write both on the same day. Why do you ask?

aloha :)
thnx a lot for visiting my blog and comenting..

@ post..
i hope its not a true story.. such a sad ending!! very disturbing!!

Pavi!!!! said...

@ Solitare... I'm sorry if i'm gettin too borin n philosophical....
But naah, its not some ppl who are ill-fated. All of us on planet earth are equally lucky and unlucky. The joys n troubles for each one of us are in different shapes n sizes n forms...but at the end of it, they all measure up to the same amount!

n I ask 'coz i liked the way both were written..one made me smile & one left me empty. - Both frm same author is fine, but same day!!!!

PS : Gonna keep naggin u with this Q - Wat stops you from beginning to write your book today, Now?

Cosmic Joy said...

A very sad story ..

One question - you said he lost his short-term memory. Does that mean he does not remember getting married to kanchan?

Solitaire said...

@still searching, thank you!

@ knatchbulley, not a true story!

@ Pavi, to answer your "nagging" question (which I dont think is nagging at all, in fact its encouraging), my dissertation is stopping me from starting that book.

@ Cosmic, he does. He is just not able to form any new memories.

Hi Solitaire,
That's a moving and beautiful love story. I just don't know if the story is factual or it was just a short story. Anyway, it's just very sad that the groom suffered a heart attack and the bride now takes care of the groom. That's life, we can't have everything we want from it. We just have to make do with what comes our way and hope that fate deals us a kinder card. Thanks for the moving post. God bless you and your family always.

this one started off well but clerly lacked the punch at the end. sorry to say this but i promised you to write clear reviews of your posts

Why is this blog with stories which have a sad ending? You are a very engaging story teller, a trait which very few are blessed with. Why don't you give a shot to some not-so-hard hitting stories? Something which end with a hope..HOPE is something which everyone lives on..isn't it?
