The Gift

She stared at the phone for the umpteenth time. It had not buzzed for over 7 hours. With a huge sigh, she sank her head into the smelly pillow. It reeked of the smell of stale blood. I must wash this tomorrow, she thought.

As she lay down with her brand new headphones plugged into her ears, she wondered how long it would be before she stopped feeling sad. She wondered if she loved him. After all that he had done, if he deserved what she gave him. After a few hours, she awoke with a start. Her bedroom was pitch dark and no one was breathing down her neck. She glanced at the clock. 9 pm. She tiptoed outside, turned on the light in the hallway, and glanced at the door. It was shut. He was not here, thank God!

She thought about yesterday when he had come home as usual with the fresh smell of alcohol on his stale breath. It took her a tad longer than usual to open the door and he had thrown the keys at her face. Sigh! The gash on her forehead looked like Harry Potter's, she chuckled. But she didn't care. He had told her that he loved her just the same as he raped her at night. It was the usual. She dare never protested as he tied her hands to the headboard, ripped her clothes off her body, and penetrated her without any mercy. She had learned that holding her breath, and thinking about the riverside that she visited with her father as a young child, helped ease the pain. And so while he groaned and moaned, she lay there in silence, like an ice-cold corpse, perspiring with anticipation to closure.

Yesterday had been his birthday. And he wanted a special gift from her, he said. He wanted to see her burn his name on her thigh. She quivered with fear. And when a teardrop ran down her cheek, he slapped her hard. He had forbidden any tears. How could she have forgotten? Stark naked, she walked to the kitchen to grab the lighter. She heard a guffaw as she walked out the room and cringed at his exclamation of how he wanted to carve his name on her buttock.
"Bring back a knife too", he yelled.

The shrill alarm in her cellphone brought her back to the present. Did I really dump him last night, she thought. After all these years of abuse, silence, screams, and tears, she finally had the courage to throw him out of the house and dump him. When she had walked inside the bedroom last night with the steak knife in one hand and the lighter in the other, she saw him sprawled over the bed on the bed, disgustingly naked, with his mouth open. Within seconds, she slit his throat and watched him bleed to death.

Then she threw his corpse out of the house and dumped him into the backyard on his birthday.

Oh My God! The write up of Abuse was hair raising.... Iam not usually a fan of sad endings... even though they do at times mirror real life...

Somehow this was the a happy ending for me.... There had to be an end to her pain... Even though it brutally ugly ... but it was needed.

This to me is one of your best story.

Good Work :)

This story is open to so many interpretations. He can be anybody. Her step-father, husband, boy friend/partner etc..

But nicely narrated.

this was hair raising...

...and why would you think of a thing like that!? I have no clue why and i am looking for one... i am... why?

gP said...

this is a classic. :) but as of all your stories, it is true. I have seen many men disregard even their children when involved in domestic violence. let alone the ones that happen outside marriage. in a sick world, its hard to find a pure person.

this story gave me goosebumps .. so many people out there who dont have the guts to pick up the knife ... scary thought :(

Oui ma.. this is such a sad story.. but maybe such things do happen in this big bad world.

Excellent writing anyway.. wonderful!

That was a very good narration. Wonderful.

horrifying, that was just terrible; the description of the abuse gave me spine chills...
ur writing always makes me picture things, and well in this case it wasnt a nice thing. {meant it as a compliment to u obviously}

Solitaire said...

@ Neeku,

Thanks!! I guess its a sad story with a "happy" ending. Kinda like what some of our hindi movies are like but more real than that.

Solitaire said...

@ Karthik,

True. Thanks! Why the "but"? Anything wrong with having too many possible interpretations?

Solitaire said...

@ Crimson,

Relax man..don't even bother. All my stories are kinda sad and depressing but there is particular reason as to why the story is woven a certain way.

Solitaire said...

@ Ghost Particle,

I would hope that there are fewer people like him in this world!

Rakesh said...

horrible yaar....before writing have u thought that if someone could have gone through this situation...if u how u react....oh its really horrible..how u thought about the story???????????

@ Deepti,

I guess when you are in a desperate situation, the adrenaline kicks in..

But it was not my intention to do so!

Solitaire said...

@ Rakesh,

I know for a fact that many women have gone through similar situations. They probably did not kill their husbands but they have gone through tremendous physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. How did I think about the story? Hmmmm..I don't know!! It just came to me!

Solitaire said...

@ Patchez,

Thanks!! I had actually closed the blog to everyone for fear of plagiarism and also was pretty positive that i would not write another story for a long long time! But I did! So it's open for a long long time now!

Solitaire said...

@ Pavi,

I know! :(

Solitaire said...

@ Rayshma,

I did not know about those news at all until your comment came in. Gosh!! Its terrible what he did! I cannot even imagine how he managed all that!

you write beautifully even when you describe horrible events. You made your story live and thats the greatest talent a writer can give to his/her readers.

I have not read many of your stories, but from all that i have read this is the best one!! :)

Whether she luvd him ? or he luvd her ? it all ends up with something really psychic; indeed a sad ending of story.

mommmmeeeeeeeeee. this girl scares me....

Solitaire said...

@ Gunj,

And so many people actually live this life!

Solitaire said...

@ Shiva,

Thank you!

Solitaire said...

@ Alok,

Psychic? And isn't this a good ending? At least she ended the cycle of abuse. Of course, ideally she should have left the house a long time ago..

Solitaire said...

@ Humble,

thank you!!

Solitaire said...

@ Chris,

Who me or the main character?

alok said...

Yes, psychic. What she have done was desparate item of a cluttered mind. don't you think she would have done some better way to tackle the situation ?

** ideally she should have left the house a long time ago..

I am gree to that point.

Oh,did I forget this is just a story ;) and go by what the writer says ...

Solitaire said...

@ Alok,

I think you might have the meaning of psychic wrong.
Anyway, this is a true story for many women out there and it is not always easy for them to leave because of many different factors.
But I choose to have her stay and ultimately kill the man. :)

alok said...

Hmm ! is it ? ‘ends up with something really psychic’ means - you be in whatever situation but what you have perceived to conclude, is become your final destination. Sorry if I am still not very clear on that part.

dreamy said...

This was so very dark. But gripping, all the same.

Satish Bolla said...

sorry for being very late in commentin. but this story doesn't look like ur usual stuff. the magic spart was missing. the story is good but the narration is not up to ur mark. don't blame me as i've very high respect n expectations for the writer in u.

Solitaire said...

@ Alok,

Abhi bhi samajh nahi aa raha :(

Solitaire said...

@ Dreamy,

Thank you!! It was meant to be dark and gripping so job well done! :)

Solitaire said...

@ Satish,

I think this is a theme that very few can understand how gruesome it can get. Each story has its own niche to make. Here the narration was not of importance but the message and awareness was. Nevertheless, thank you! My readers are my best critics! :)

Unknown said...

I really liked you're stories. I like that they are unpredictable and that they are short. Keep writing. I also added you to my blog-roll. I hope you don't mind

The writing was realy good..and all adjectives suit it.It was vivid, descriptive, clear and fresh..Yet why such a concept?? With your power of the pen..why not help people dream of better things??
But still...awesome narration.

Solitaire said...

@ Megha,

Of course I do not mind at all!! Thank you for the appreciation. Keeps me going.

Solitaire said...

@ Elusive,

Why do you think that girls cannot do justice to it? It is the women who are victims anyway, right? I feel like I cannot do justice to stories where the man is the main character!!

Solitaire said...

@ AmitL,

Awww...not fair!! Its a short story anyway. You would have not had to wait more than 5 minutes to read the end. One of my friends does that all the time too!!

Solitaire said...

@ Lakshmi,

Thank you!! I guess she finally simply had had it!! Better late than never.

Solitaire said...

@ Suvarna,

Thanks!! What is "provocation"?

Solitaire said...

@ John F,

You mean you came here only to tag me? :(
The tag was done a few days ago.Check warm fuzzies.

Solitaire said...

@ Ceedy,

Thanks Ceedy! The law and order people have not yet discovered her act. I wonder what they would have to say about this!

Solitaire said...

@ Phoenix,

Don't you think Yash Chopra, Aditya Chopra, and SRK do enough of that..making people build rosy castles in the air and then leaving them on their own to discover that they are not going to come true. I want people to realize what is truly going on out there and how many of us are truly fortunate to not be living the life of these people.
