His First Time

They met while taking a geology class together. She had walked in late, had found the seat next to him to be the only one available, had ended up asking him for notes on what she had missed, and he in turn asked her out for the weekend. That Friday night, they went out to watch "Patch Adams" and sat there nervously, each with their own popcorn and soda, making no conversation. He felt that it had been his worst date ever. She thought that he was nothing but a nerd. And yet, when he bravely mustered a, "What are you doing tomorrow night?", as he dropped her off at her dorm, she heard herself saying, "Nothing. Wanna hang out?", much to her own surprise.

Exactly 2 years later, he woke up one sunny morning with a tight knot in his stomach. He went about his daily chores as if it was a normal day. But he knew it was not. It was the day that would change his life forever. He texted her good morning, got dressed, barely managed to have a sip of his coffee, and wore mismatched socks to work. In the afternoon, he feigned a headache and took the day off. He glared at the TV all afternoon until it was time to pick her up. 2 hours later, she was weeping, out of joy, proudly flaunting a diamond on her ring finger. "Oh I cannot wait for us to be married!!!", she shrieked as she ran towards their car with excitement. In the next week, it was finalized. Their wedding date was set to be August 17th, exactly 8 months away.

"Sweetheart", she said. "I am so thankful that you are ok with waiting until the wedding. I want our first time to be special."
"Me too", he said kissing her mouth gently.

8 months flew by as they ran around everyday trying to coordinate their dream wedding. Her life revolved around appointments with photographers, videographers, pastors, bridesmaids, caterers, salons, boutiques, and him. His life revolved around their new house, gift registries, travel bookings, tuxedos, and her.

As they both lay on their own beds a night before the wedding, they each wondered how it would be to feel their naked bodies against each other, for the first time ever. Their friends had teased them about not having gone all the way. But they had not minded. They had wanted to wait. It was going to be their own special moment. The one that they had waited for. And it was to happen exactly 23 hours from now, he thought. He slept peacefully that night knowing that he would wake up to the happiest day of his life.

The wedding was perfect. She looked as pretty as a princess, he thought, as she walked down the aisle while she blushed with nervousness. And as they kissed as man and wife, he felt a surge of happiness run through him. "Mrs. Carol Taylor", he whispered to her, as they hopped into their car to drive to their honeymoon suite at the Holiday Inn. She cried and laughed at the same time unable to contain her joy.

Their bed had rose petals on it, courtesy the hotel. They could care less. Before long, he had taken her wedding dress off and was admiring her beautiful nakedness. Within minutes, they were in each other's arms kissing fervently and passionately like they never had. "Go slow", she managed to mutter but he did not hear her. He continued to stroke her, touch her, and kiss her while she let out soft moans. "Are you ready?", he asked running his fingers down to feel her wetness. She nodded her head. As both of them came together a few minutes later, they each felt like they would explode, their entire world rocking, as they perspired and held on tight to each other.

Gasping for breath, he said, "That was beautiful."

She smiled and wrapped her arms around him dreaming of a beautiful life with him.

She did not know that she had the HIV. He did not know that now he too had the HIV.

Well...That was a twsited end again. I had heard that the Supreme Court was contemplating about instating a rule to make AIDS test a mandatory thing before marriage. Don't know whether it gets implemented in the near future.

And your blogpost rocks as usual :)

oh geez!
u know this is why HIV tests are more important than matching horoscopes to get people married!

@ Rayshma...yeah!! If only people would worry about that rather than the caste, subcaste, gotra, nakshatra..etc!!

Interesting build-up. Loved it.

Thats why its imp for ppl to get tested b4 committing into a r'ship. Its not fair by the other person not to know and walk into such a traumatic future.

Keshi.

Naheeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

(tat was our typical bollywood nahee) i lurved the story but for a change dint really like the twist in it :(
guess indian minds are trained to anticipate wat the end wud be like and moreso hope for a happy end.

Solitaire said...

@ Compassion, thank you!!

@ Patchez, awww. Good luck!

@ Deepti, yes...more than horoscope matching.

@ Ria, I know! :) Thanks!

@ Poison, thank you!

Solitaire said...

@ Keshi, yeah we worry so much about how many girlfriends or boyfriends someone has had only for the "baggage" purposes but does anyone care to find out if they have STDs?

@ Elusive, haaaaaaaaaan!! Is this the first time you are reading a story like this here?

Pavi!!!! said...

Does the HIV matter if both of 'em liked each other as persons, found themselves to be compatible..Thats why they got married rite?

HIV is unforunate if its a one night-stand.But in a situaution where the 2 ppl are in love i donno the solution.

Solitaire said...

@ Pavi, the problem does not lie in the fact that they got married. The irony is the main concern here. If only they would have known, they would have taken precautions. Also, the irony lies in the fact that it was his first time, something that he was so excited about, knowing little that he was getting excited about contracting the HIV.

Gonecase aka. Shutter Singh said...

Sorry to say but I find the ending to be a bit abrupt...previous ones were better !

Vrijilesh Rai said...

Hmmm.. quite a sad ending.. never expected that to have happened until it did!

Gayatri said...

But I like happy endings :(

Solitaire said...

@ Gonecase, do you really care if the ending is abrupt or not? I think I feel bad for the young chap! Abrupt or not, the fact is that he contracted HIV in one second. That sure is abrupt!

@ Vrij, yeah..a sad ending to a happy chapter.

@ Gayatri, too bad! :(

did she know?... if she did, and was hiding the truth, then the reality is not as rosy as is seems...

if she didn't then, well, still... it wasn't the first time for her at least... so something not right there...

and if it was contracted through some other means.. then, i don't know... you can't do much about it... can you?.. or should you?

i am curious... what exactly was going on in your "exciting" (:))mind when you were writing this one?..

Pri said...

@ solitaire
actually yaa...now that i think about it this really was sad :(
the 'yayyy' was for u btw...ur return to the land of 'twisted' surprise endings ;)

but looking more in depth into the story, am just wondering how the girl contracted it in the first place..not that it matters or would make a difference...
but somehow the potrayal of the character in the story leans more towards the possibility of a mismatched blood transfusion...
if tats the case, it really is sad :(

Solitaire said...

@ Pri, I think that there are just a lot of ironies in this story. Glad I was finally able to make you said. :D

@ D sinner, thanks! What's up with your display pic? any social message there?

@ Mush, thank you!

Solitaire said...

@ Sam, good for you! What's "phir milenge"? Is it a hindi movie with a similar story?

@ Vishesh, excuse me? I did not have the HIV! :I

Its ironic!!! and Nice :)

Did you watch Dus Kahaniyan?
One story which I think is the best out of the ten "Zahir" also deals with this subject very well.

Solitaire said...

@ Humble, thanks and :(

@ Ceedy, thanks. I have seen that movie. Unfortunately, my movie memory is pathetic. I forget what the movie was about in a few weeks. I only remember how the movie made me feel. Now if its Aamir's movie, its altogether another story.

well.. in phir milenge... shilpa shetty is a succesful ad executive.. and salman khan well i don't remember... they were under the tutelage of a guru at soempoint of time and had come together along with the gang to celebrate some occasion... shilpa n salman loved each other.. and they slept.. sallu had HIV which was duly transferred to Shilpa... shilpa find out abt this when sallu was on his deathbed.... shilpa's fears of having got the HIV gets confirmed... distraught she informs her mentor, boss and firm's CEO abt it... that fella was distraught too and wasted no time in firing her....shilpa fights back with the help of abhishek (lawyer)... after that its the story of Philadelphia (if you haven't seen it get a copy now!!)!!

Sam said...

waise, IMO the HIV test is quite a necessity... I don't want to termed as a traitor by my wife later on... i had better find out before hand and thus prevent another life from getting destroyed!!!
again a popular concept is having HIV means you are fooling arnd... whereas there are so many possible causes!!

Nirmal said...

ha ha ha ha ........
the guy waited 4 this so long.....

Solitaire said...

@ Nirmal, :( You laughing at the poor guy?

@ Sam, yeah true!! But someone brought up a good point. That if you love someone, whether or not they are HIV should not matter. Thanks for that detailed story. I guess I don't need to watch it anymore!

if my girl is HIV i wont' stop loving her... she'd still be the same for me... but it might matter to her that she is HIV. On a reverse note... I wud never be able to stand teh fact that because of me the one I love has contracted HIV!!
it's love alone which guides both the souls to their actions... no one's wrong... funny situation isn't it??

The fact was insignificant really, he would have got HIV had they gone all the way before the wedding as well...but neways that is not the main point here is it?

Beautifully written as always, kudos!

Well, as Gonecase said, the ending was too abrupt. And it lacked flow.

But about the story, things like this can happen (quite easily).

Hence the yikes.

Vartika said...

that one i didn't see coming!

vasanth said...

The story, very well conceived and well written, taxes one'scredibility
on two counts

1. A girl who is so victorian as not to go all the way during courtship could hardly have acquired HIV through an earlier consensual intercourse. Either she must have been raped or got the bug thru intravenous drugs. Her character as delineated does not fit into either scenario.

2. If she had the infection and was not aware of it for such a long time certainly primary signs of the disease such as loss of weight, persistent cough, weakness, etc would have manifested. It is strange that the latent period was so prolonged and not noticeable.

Now coming to terms with what had happened HIV aids is no longer the dread disease that it was initially thought to be. It can be controlled through proper therapy and monitoring. Laws have been passed in most progressive countries prohibiting discrimination against HIV aids patients. Newer medicines are being developed and extensive trials are on for a vaccine

Premarital HIV testing is not the soloution. If the person had exposure a few days before the test, the window period of three to six months would mask the presence of the virus and show false negative.

The couple can live happily ever after by enjoying their married life ( no condoms necessary as both of them have it) but the hubby should be vasectomised so that they donot have HIV ridden progeny.

Thanks for a thought provoking piece !
