Innocent Love

He heard the doctor say, "kidney stones" several times and had no idea what they were. All he knew was that his father was not feeling well and that their mother was hardly home. And then one fine day, when he was only 13, his father died. As aunts and uncles came home to comfort his mother, him, and his younger sister, grieving, wailing, and moaning, he heard them say, "You are now the man of the house" over and over again.

Days turned into months and gradually he realized that relatives no longer stopped by. His mother was snickered at in social gatherings for wearing bright colors, putting on a huge bindi, and chewing tobacco despite being a widow. He never understood what the big deal was just like he never understood why his mother was never home, even in the evenings. But one evening, as he rocked himself on their antique swing in their yard, waiting for nightfall so that he could cry himself to sleep, he saw his mother bring home a stranger.

He was surprised. They never had any visitors. And yet, this man's demeanor seemed like he was strangely comfortable with his mother. That night, his mother told him and his sister that she was in love, and was going to marry this strange man. The 42-year-old lanky man with grey hair and smelly feet would now be his step-father. He retreated to his room without much display of emotion. After all, he was the man of the house. And men don't cry. They only toss and turn for hours before they fall asleep at dawn in an eerie house.

Weeks later, when he was convinced that he had lost his mother's love to the stranger who never came home after that, he saw HER, the love of his life. She was sitting demurely on the couch watching TV with a vacant gaze that made her look even beautiful. "How is it that I hardly talk to her when she is so beautiful?", he thought. He approached her without any hesitation as if he had done this all his life. He sat down next to her and asked her how she was. She turned her head towards him, and instantly burst into tears. "I feel so lost", she said. "Shhhh...I am with you." he responded, as he cradled her, stroking her curly hair, and resting her head on his shoulder. That day, they watched TV together, hand in hand. That night, he fell asleep, with a smile on his face.

As months passed, their love for each other blossomed. When his mother was gone in the evenings, he spent every moment with her. They hugged, held hands, kissed, giggled, had pillow fights, snuggled, and gave each other everything that was missing from their lives..LOVE, COMFORT, COMPANIONSHIP. His mother had no idea what her son was upto for she never returned before midnight by which he was always fast asleep in his bedroom.

One evening, he overheard his mother talking to the strange man. And he realized that she would not return home that night before 2 am. He felt elated. These days he looked forward to some alone time, unlike the times when he would crave for his mother's company. Without a tinge of guilt, he realized that tonight was the night that he could plan something. Something romantic..for the love of his life.

That evening, after dinner, he invited her into his bedroom. She coyly observed the candles that lit the room brightly. "Is this for me?", she giggled nervously. "Yes", he said, and pulled her towards him. "Did you like it?", he asked. She could barely answer him as she felt his lips against his neck and as his hand unbuttoned her shirt gingerly. "Oh my God!", should we be doing this, she whispered. He chose not to answer her. Within minutes, they were sprawled on his bed, half naked. While in their own little paradise, they did not hear the door open, and their mother enter his bedroom. She screamed as she saw both her children in bed together....

a li'l bit predictable. i suspected the end in the middle itself. but the narration was awesome and this is the reason that made the story worth enough to read till end.

nice story. ;)

@ Ankur,
Why did you think I would not take it that way? I have actually witnessed something very similar in real life. This is more fact than fiction.

@ Pavi,
These days a lot of people are having incestual relationships. People like to believe that that is prevalent only in Western cultures. But I beg to differ. Its going to take decades before people start accepting the truth.

Solitaire said...

@ Keshi,
Why are you so shocked girl? Did you not see it coming? Its becoming a bitter truth of many families.

@ Satish,
Thank you. Its rather sad that my readers here are rather wrapped up with the ending of my stories. Hindi movies always have a predictable end. Boy weds girl, villain dies, and everyone lives happily ever after. And yet we continue watching them.

Solitaire said...

@ Deepti,
Thank You. You are one of the few so far who have said that the end is unpredictable.

@ Amrith,
Thanks! I barely remember the names of my stories. I am surprised that you do!

@ Zee,
I know. Horrid but sadly true.

Solitaire said...

@ Sam,
Rightly said. It is the truth for many families. Some choose to ignore it.

@ Rayshma,
Thank you!

@ Compassion,
Thank you!! Sad facts of life are always difficult to digest. These things are unacceptable but they do occur.

Ankur said...

well, i thought u wont go to it coz its cruel!!!

ya, the incestual relationships is becoming a reality, but the question is whether is right or wrong, i am noone to decide, but my personal view is that such relationships are not good for anyone, sex is a desire, not a need, and definitely not a compulsion...

When you say its more than fiction, than i do agree with you, but isnt it shocking!!!

U know at times i wonder, is it really prevalent in Western Culture, i dont think so personally, it may be more prevalent in India coz we dont have the liberty to have sex when and with whom we want(in case the other one agrees). Here a relationship is not taken to that level until unless there is a feeling of doing the same by both the parties, and i m talkin abt most cases. Yes we are growing up, doin things we want to, but still even healthy sex relationships cant be talked abt, coz its a taboo, and certainly pre-marital sex is a stigma.

I think theres a difference in my thinking of accepting the truth and acknowleding it is as something acceptable.

Cheers!!!

P.S. I visit coz i like to read what u like, so thanks to u that these blogs of urs r open to public. :)

aiyo.. where did my comment go?

Anonymous said...

yes i have done an interview with sibling lovers.. everyone has a dark- pyschological background.. very well scripted

Anonymous said...

Well written... even though knowing what would be the end your narration held me to read it till the end... about what you say about incest relations... I do not know about relative prevalence of it in the indian society as compared to the western society... but yes it exists in many forms... and i have 2 such caes in real life... one even in close relations... Thses things are generally not discussed .. kept under the tabs.. maybe a few years.. after which these things might come to light....

Anonymous said...

and i loved how you left a cliffhanger ending to the story... hmm... i wonder what did the mother did ??? was the boy imagining it all ?? or what???

Rereading the story once lolz.. it does not seem the the end is predictible or unpredictible.. its not there... story does not end here...

Solitaire said...

@ Ankur, thank YOU for coming back over and over again to read my blogs AND spending valuable time and effort in commenting.

@ Chriz, which comment?! Maybe you should write about those interviews some day.

@ Samby, so thrilled to see you here. You thought outside of the box. People are wrapped up with the end, beginning, climax, plot what not...but you give it another viewpoint. Awesome!

@ Mishra, I read the post but somehow could not comment there. The post is well-written, excellent, in fact. But the story seems to be one of the many scenes already seen in hindi movies.

wud u call it 'incest'?

somehow I won't!!! even if i sound awkward...

lemme know...

Pavi!!!! said...

@ Solitare : We have discussed this topic before on ur post..yes, its probably becoming more common these days..n frankly its not v.healthy.

I guess a zillion yrs ago..people got into a physical relationship mainly to make babies. In many communities it used to be (and is yet) a common practice to marry within the family..for eg marry cousins.n research has proved that babies made by members of the same family have more chances of deformities. So that is why probably centuries back physical relationships between sibling wasn't encouraged.

Mel Avila Alarilla said...

That was a beautiful love story, so engrossing and spellbinding but the ending was so shocking, my jaw almost fell down from my mouth. That's the problem with children being left alone all by themselves. Sometimes, the urge of carnality become such an irresistible force that result in cases of shocking incest. Your story telling style is so good and engrossing. I would give it a perfect 10. Thanks for the fantastic post. God bless.

Anonymous said...

yes wud write about in someday soon

Anonymous said...

but they are serious subjects.. wud have to add a tinch of humor in it cos my blog is in the HUMOR stream...

ceedy said...

Very well written. This is a common thing in Parsi community, not necessarily between siblings but they do marry withing the family...it has genetic problems where the bad genes are multiplied over and over again.
They do have many health issues.

With the way things are - where people are becoming more and more lonely - this could very well be accepted in the future as any other kind of relationship.

Amandeep Singh said...

A well written piece indeed!

Solitaire said...

@ D Sinner, yes, I would. Technically, the definition requires sexual intercourse. I think they were on their way to that. Why do you think differently?

@ Pavi, yes possible. Ceedy has also mentioned the Parsi community in his comment.

Solitaire said...

@ Mel, thank you so much for your kind words. BTW, did you fix that problem on your site? I am so afraid to come there now.

@ Chriz, really? Will writing about it in a humorous fashion take away its impact?

@ Ceedy, I do not know if it will be better accepted in non-parsi communities or not but yes, I think we might see more of this happening. Not only in Western cultures but also in Eastern cultures where dating and premarital sex may continue to be a taboo.

Solitaire said...

@ Freesherry, hai na? And yet people will judge them and admonish them.

@ Macadamia, thank you!!!

@ Vicky, nope not yet. Only some bitching. I am sure you are not interested in that. Did you get the invite?

@ Standbymind, thank you!!

Literally, i agree with it being incest...

but leave the technical or the literal part...what else can we expect in such situations...

ummm, always wondered how and why incest happens ..

Prachi said...

very well narrated. a part of my mind has realised that it was coming, just tht it wanted something else to happen. alas...

thats the way the bitter reality goes.

cheers. :)

Solitaire said...

@ D sinner, yes. The kids were drawn into that situation because of their own needs that were not being satisfied by their parent.

@ Veens, thanks!!

@ Vicky, I have no idea what the means. Sorry!

@ Patchez, thanks a lot! What's happening at your end?

Solitaire said...

@ Backpakker, there are so many situations that can lead to incest, just as extramarital affairs.

@ Prachi, imagine how it must be for people who actually go through these situations when it is so hard for us to digest it in fictional stores.

i guessed the ending di....brilliant work as always...

di, ur template rocks...but it hurts my eyes :P

freesherry said...

who are people to judge them?
they were kids who lost both the pillars of life.. their father to death and their mother to her own choices.. they had no one else to fill their void and they had no idea where it was going
a lot of people might judge the mother.. but may be drowning her in parties was her way of dealing with her loss, not the best way may be, but she had lost all her life to fate's card and she escaped into what she saw as the easiest way out.. and it was her kids who suffered..
