The Party

I walked into a party nervous about being there by myself and knowing no one but the host. It was only my 2nd month in the new city and though there was nothing to complain about, life wasn't that exciting too. So there I was, trying to spice things up a bit, building my social circle, and prancing around in party clothes that would otherwise have gathered dust in my walk-in closet.

There he was, looking forlorn, standing by the window with a beer in his hand. I took in his blue shirt and stone-washed jeans and wondered if he was single. A quick glance at his ring finger confirmed that he was not married but I was pretty sure that he either had a girlfriend or was gay. After all, isn't that the sad story that most single girls narrate after they spot a cute guy?

I glanced at him several times hoping that he would not notice. It was hard to stop myself from looking at him. He had the most gorgeous blue eyes that complimented his outfit and his silky locks of hair made him appear like a model straight out of a "Head and Shoulders" commercial. My silent prayers were not heeded. He indeed did notice me while I tried to pretend that I was staring into space and not at him. My heart began to race as he approached me and said with the smoothest voice ever, "Hi! I am Paul." Tongue-tied, I barely managed to smile back. With a questioning look on his face, he continued to stare at me.

"Sheela!!!". I was shaken out of my reverie as my friend yelled out my name. "When did you arrive?", she asked completely ignoring Mr. Paul. "About 20 minutes ago.", I managed to mutter. "Great!! Hope you are having fun!", she said and wandered off into the crowd while Mr. Paul grinned at me.

"I thought you had strep or something.", he said with a smirk on his face. His sarcasm failed to perturb me, as it would otherwise have with anyone else. "I am sorry!", I exclaimed. "I was just a bit distracted then. I am Sheela. Nice to meet you!" And that is how Mr. Paul and I struck a conversation that evening that lasted well into midnight. The house began to fill up as guests of all shapes, sizes, and colors arrived and danced to loud music. It was apparent that Paul and I both knew no one but the host and his wife, my friend. It was as if God had brought us both together to keep each other company that night, I thought.

We managed to slip out of the party without anyone noticing. I was a bit tipsy from having had 3 pegs of Bacardi and Coke and knew I had a little too much to drink.

"Are you drunk?", he asked flashing his magnetic smile yet again.
"Yes, I think so.", I said, and without any further thought wrapped my arms around him.

Before long, we were in the backseat of his car, kissing each other fervently.
"Are we doing the right thing?", I managed to say as he paused to catch some breath.
He did not answer me and continued to kiss me all over my face and neck. Very soon, he had undone my bra and his hands had deftly made their way into my shirt, groping my breasts. As he pinched them hard, I began to gather my senses. I opened my eyes, squirming in pain, and tried to make myself sit up. I failed to do so as Paul grabbed my wrists and bound my hands together.

"STOP!", I shrieked. He refused to listen. "STOP, Paul. Please, stop.", I pleaded. "You are hurting me!", I screamed. He merely chuckled. No one heard my wails that night as Paul gagged me with his handkerchief.

Thirty minutes later, I was back in my apartment.

Today, all my party clothes are gathering dust in my walk-in closet. I refuse to go out of my apartment after sunset. I refuse to date. I refuse to let any man touch me. I refuse to talk to anyone whose name is Paul.

This is the story of Sheela, a victim, who lost her virginity the night Paul raped her.

This is purely fictional. Any resemblances to anyone you know is purely coincidental.

why does it have to be a sad story all the tym???

Satish Bolla said...

hmm, a touching one. was thinking that this one is a cute love story. but the last few sentences changed the entire picture. nice narration. managed to deceive the reader, as usual.

btw, the last line of "any resemblances being coincidental" made me feel that u r lying abt the story being fictional. jus a small hunch.

Such incidents are really unfortunate, but I feel the girls are responsible (or irresponsible) somewhere too. I see the undergrad girls here. They act like absolutely clueless people and then complain when someone misbehaves.

I liked the message behind this one:

Never Let your guard down. Gather the intentions of the other before they can harm you.

:)

Nice way to express it.

Solitaire said...

@ Shobna,

I don't know what you are talking about. Are you talking about this story?

Solitaire said...

@ Karthik,

Probably not. Maybe she did not think that all men can act like animals.

Solitaire said...

@ Humble,

Wicked mind. Can't help it!

Solitaire said...

@ Satish,

Thanks! Its a twisted mind. I intended it to be a cute love story but as I started typing it became a nasty one.

Readers are weird, though. In one story I put the message that its a true story of someone I know. One person thought its my story. Now I put its a fictional story and now you think its not.

Maybe its better not to write anything and let people assume whatever they want...

Solitaire said...

@ Gayatri,

Yeah! Any rape for that matter but date rapes leave one so betrayed!

Solitaire said...

@ P,

Yes, I think when it comes to date rapes, the girl can be extra cautious. However, I do not think one can put the entire blame on the girl for any rape (which I know you are not doing).

Solitaire said...

@ Rantra,

Thanks! Rapes are horrifying! I personally would not like to see one even in a movie. Leaves me scared for a few days.

Solitaire said...

@ Ishqia,

Did you truly think this story is only about sex and that all the others also? Maybe you can read these a few years down the line. You will understand the messages behind them.

Thanks!

Date rapes have become enormously common these days. Although some of the girls do accept it as part of the game they put their feet into.. a few of them do get devastated.

But then its also become common for girls to make a move too.. I know of a colleague who ditched this guy because he did not do anything for 5 dates.. she wanted action and he gave her none.

And yes, well written story.

@ Soham: When a girl says NO ! It means NO... Whether Devil or a Husband or a Boyfriend.

He is a total DEVIL ... if he was a man... he would stop when she said to stop.... This reflects his evil character.

Just because she like him... that doesn't justify that she was also into it...

Its a very Chauvinistic Attitude.... My friend !

I agree she shouldn't have drunk too much.. but if he was a gentleman ... he would have dropped her home safely...

And Believe me no Girl in the wildest of the wildest dream would invite a Devil !

Vinay said...

thanks for visiting my blog... and leaving that comment... your posting is very nice... thrilling but yet so sad... like your style solitaire.... :)

Soham Shah said...

@Neeku:

When he kissed her all over her face, she never said NO !!

When he opened her bra, she never said NO !!

But once she started get hurting, may because tht man was wild and he was completely engrossed in making out, she said NO ..

If tht man would hv pushed her to his car and did that then it would hv been counted as a rape but here both went to his car knowing that what they are doing ..

Solitaire said...

@ Neeku,

Thank you for the great comment.
Totally agree with you.

The girl may have had too much to drink and that is her mistake. She was also maybe naive in trusting this guy very easily but there is no denying that the man has used his physical strength to take advantage of her. Moreover, she did plead to him to stop but beyond that she was unable to do anything.

Haaa..my blood boils when people very easily blame girls TOTALLY for being raped as if the men are animals who have to absolutely eat meat that is thrown to them.

Keshi said...

date-raping? sadly this happens more often than we think it does.

Solitaire said...

@ Vinay,

Thank you! Do visit again.

Solitaire said...

@ Soham,

Do you very conveniently miss out the fact that she did say no before they began the SEXUAL ACT (more specifically...penetration without sounding too crude). He gagged her and used his physical strength to RAPE her. A sexual act without the consent of the person is considered RAPE.

In case you are still not convinced, you can check out its meaning on dictionary.com

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rape

Solitaire said...

@ Keshi,

Very sad. People even use drugs to spike girls' drinks with the intention of raping them later.

Soham Shah said...

@Sol:

He wasn't smooth(infact he was wild !!) in making love that's why she complained and asked him to stop .. It was not her Conscious or moral which was telling her to restrain from it .. It was the pain and hardship she was getting from her partner that stopped her ..

If he would hv been smooth and calm in making out, she also would hv engrossed in it completely ..

Neeku said...

@ Soham: after reading your response I would sincerely would to suggest you two things.

1) Read the story one more time again...

She did not enjoy AT ALL The FORCED AFFECTION ... he was just getting his kicks out of her in name of ALCOHOL !

2) Read the Link Solitaire shared with you. This may give you more insight of the term "RAPE"

and after these suggestion with a small glee of hope I wish you would understand and respect a Woman's consent.

IT Might be just a Pleasure for Guys like PAUL to force it out... ALOMST LIKE PUKING the Manliness out... but what's more horrifying and disgusting is somebody forcing that PUKE INSIDE YOU !

And I say this because it had happened to one my frined. Thankfully she was SAVED on time... but till this date it haunts her !

And for your information the guy was no other then her own fiance !

Thankfully even with alchol she was sane enough to save herself.. but not all of them are lucky as her...

Its very disappointing to talk in defence for guys like paul !

ishqia said...

i know dear the base of the story is something else.. what i meant was why they always revolve around sex.. i mean u should attempt at writing something else also.. not always a story where sex took place.. u r a great writer.. u must look for more subjects..

Solitaire said...

@ Soham,

First of all, he was not her PARTNER.

Secondly, yes he was wild AND harsh. That was a red flag to her and she did not just say NO because she wanted "smooth sex" as you put it.

Thirdly, whatever followed AFTER she said no WAS SEX WITHOUT CONSENT AND WITH FORCE. That qualifies as rape.

As Neeku said...NO means NO. And if he still proceeded (TAKE NOTE: HE GAGGED HER TOO SO SHE COULD NOT SCREAM), he RAPED her.

PERIOD.

Ghost Particle said...

to some this might not be something new, for some this is violent. i think the ones that are defensive to justify the guys action have done it themself before. And date/party rapes happen because the girl is either drugged or drunk. Now dont come out and say a girl cant date or party. a coke looks like a coke even when its spiked, we dont have to bring around a chemist kit to find out. how an unfortunate gesture can lead to rape is the full fault of the guy. no law would accept the word of the guy if he says he was invited. read some newspapers before answering next time.

Even if she genuinely says she wants it, while being drunk or drugged, in the court the rapist is guilty. that is called the rule of law, and justice.

and we certainly dont have to support any idiot who still can say it was invited...unless everyone can agree that women can walk around in duck suits. i promise it will be made in pink too. but then please dont come and say the rape happend coz it was an inviting duck suit.

Solitaire said...

@ Ishqia,

Ok..your comment forced me to dig into the archives and of the 20 I have written so far, only 7 have a sexual element to them.

I am surprised that the sex ones stand out so much for you. Makes me wonder why.

Soham Shah said...

@Sol, Neeku:

**Thirdly, whatever followed AFTER she said no WAS SEX WITHOUT CONSENT AND WITH FORCE. That qualifies as rape **

Yeah .. I got that .. Once she said NO , he should hv stopped .. No doubt about that .. I m not justifying his cruel act .. it qualifies as rape once she said NOOO ..

**Secondly, yes he was wild AND harsh. That was a red flag to her and she did not just say NO because she wanted "smooth sex" as you put it. **

I dont agree here .. she wanted a smooth sex .. she would not hv raised the red flag if he would hv been smooth, calm and not wild - furious .. It would hv been a different story altogather..

Neeku said...

@ Satish :Just a small clarification!

What I meant is that this could be a very true story... stuff like this happens all the time... one just need to be careful... Thats what I meant !

someting similiar had happened to a friend... however... she was not alone and in time even with her enuf alcohol she was able to save herself and call out for her friends for help... but not all are that lucky !

Solitaire said...

@ Soham,

As Neeku said..."read the story again".

Do you recall that she was hesitant to begin with?

Maybe she was interested in "making out" and not going all the way and would have said NO anyway. How can you assume?

So in your mind, she said NO only because she wanted it to be smooth and not because it was a violation of her.

!!!!

Satish Bolla said...

@neeku
okie yaar. stuff like this happens in this F$%&ing world. everyone can't be so patient enough to hear to their inner voices.
i pity your frnd. but happy to know dat she escaped in time.

Solitaire said...

@ Neeku,

Did your friend break her engagement with the guy?

Why was he so desperate?

Neeku said...

@ Soham: if you " LIKE " someone or .... if you find someone cute ... that doesn't mean... she yearns for "Smooth Se#" !!!

The defination of liking somebody is completely different for girls...

Girls don't usually dress people down mentally... like (some) guys... would do...

So you cannot assume here ... that she wanted Smooth Se# !

Satishbhai, her only fault was she drank too much at the wrong time.... in front of the wrong guy!

say it her fate... her bad luck.... her muddled wisdom... or whatever. ... but this mistake had cost her big time than what she derseve.. a scar and shame... because of some Leech, greedy, Se# offender.

And thats NOT Right !

Haave bus java devo....

Neeku said...

@ Solitaire: Yeah... she That Deedee broke off engagement... but the guys family turned really really bitter... made sure that they would slander her character in everyway...

It was really sad :(

And you know how the Conservative Gujju Community can be...

she tells me it was her bad dream... but imagine if she was not saved... then she would have had to marry such a monster...

And that too ... this is Arrange marriage... coming from Saara Gharno chokro and family ! Uugh ... its disgusting !

Solitaire said...

@ Neeku,

It has nothing to do with "sara ghar no chhokro". We know how even well-educated men think when it comes to rape and sex.

Neeku said...

@ Ghost: I agree (some) women do how to manipulate... but believe me (some) guys are also not that IDIOT and know very well get there things around... Cunningness is not "Gender specific"

This story DOESNOT claim ALL MEN are like Paul... if you can relate to PAUL TYPE OF MEN than I do really pity you...

In this story... she was taken advantage of her vulnerability ... BECAUSE of influence of alcohol !

and INVITATION COMES WITH WELCOMING RESPONSE.... SHE NEVER RESPONDED AFFECTIONATELY TO HIS GESTURES... All she wanted to do is STOP him. All she was saying ..was Clear NO !

So this story is not about manipulating women in Pink Duck suit ! And neither about meek, gullible Blue-shirted Superman :D !

Solitaire said...

@ Neeku,

I think you got Ghost's comment wrong. I think he is against men who are defending Paul and his actions. He is condemning them!!

This is an interesting discussion.
Solitaire hope you dont mind me asking this - as there are some intersting inputs....

Since the discussion are going both ways I would like to ask a question to everyone -

(For guys)If you are in love with someone and feel she is the one and find out that she got raped (not because of alcohol or any other reasons that one could possibly say it was her fautl too...) what would you do :

- if you were that guy who loved her

- if you were that girl and you know he was going to propose to you....

(the disclaimer that Sol put up on her story still holds true here)

Solitaire said...

@ Alok,

WOW! Thanks for sharing that. I loved reading every bit of it!

Solitaire said...

@ Humble,

What can I say? Even my wicked mind is twisted!

Solitaire said...

@ Ceedy,

I would tell the guy upfront about the mishap after I feel that I trust him enough and that we appear to be a in long-term relationship. It is better than he finding out through outside sources. Moreover, this is not an incident that one can forget easily and I might need his support, perhaps all my life, in overcoming this trauma.

Yes, I know I might have to bear the possible consequence of him abandoning me or saying things like "used maal" a phrase often used by men who are afraid of getting into relationships with those who have had sex before. But then I would be better off not being with such a guy.

Solitaire said...

@ Ghost,

I think you are better off being where you are than in a place where there is so much drama and double standards!

Solitaire said...

@ Pinku,

I think that alcohol and date rape drugs should be BANNED!

Solitaire said...

@ Soham,

What are you talking about?

ceedy said...

What you mention is probably the case maybe most of the times...guys abandoning...

but we do agree that there are exceptions...so say after knowing all this - the guy says - he does not care - he still loves her as much - and nothing changes for him

and now she is relucatant to pursue it furthur cause she feels he does not deserve her....

what then?

Solitaire said...

@ Ceedy,

What is the purpose of all these hypothetical yet very specific questions.

If she thinks that he does not deserve her then she thinks of herself as being "used maal". She would then need a shrink.

ceedy said...

The purpose was I was thinking of a story on similar lines of what I am questioning...just when you put up the post...but was not very convinced with the way I thought the girl thought...so the specificity...

But then I saw some of the comments and mannnnnnnnnnn I cannot believe how people can say things like 'that woman was asking for it'. I mean wtf - someone getting abused is someone getting abused - irrespective of what state that victim is in. Anyway I won't make it a long rant. I just think it is VERY WRONG to say a woman was 'asking for it' when she gets raped.

Anti Rape Device:
-----------------

Maybe we should have devices.
Like the IUDs or something.
When the lady goes for such a party or to some dark alley alone,
she could switch it on.
Then soemone tries to violate her, the device would go into action.

Some possibilities of what the 'action' could be...(we could even have combination of these)

1) Tattoo 'it' with a big 'RAPIST'
2) Inject local anaesthesia to make it limp
3) Autodial up police, 911 whatever, with GPS coordinates.
4) Inject general anaesthesia so that the fellow drops unconcious till the police arrive
5) Start big blaring noises and alarms of "Rape! Help! Please save me! etc
6) Inject something that makes him permanently impotent/unfertile/both
7) The device locks around 'it' and separates out from the lady. The unlocking keys or codes would only be with the local police. So the choice is his. Show up, or be unable to use it for rape or non-rape in future. Or risk breaking 'something else' while trying to break the lock (with a hammer?)
8) Give really bad electric shock there or secrete picric acid (of ants bite fame)

Yeah but women too can be bitches. Someone could take revenge on her decent caring loving guy about something trivial with the device.

Plus, if the rapist gets really angered, the lady who could have got off with 'just rape' might suffer lot of physical injury or even murder.

So even before considering the technical feasibility, this would need lot of other considerations

Hmmm maybe I should put this idea on my blog

Somewhat Predictable ending of a heartburning story. But then even if told hundred times, girls fall prey to the hounds.Provocative dressings attracting men or girls falling for sweet nothings, its the girls who bear the scar for rest of the lives.
So all that this old man can repeat,Girls be careful !!
Nice flow in the story.

Another gripping short story..was almost able to picturize the story as it unfolded,a la a Bollywood tale..*claps*

rashmi said...

well written...but quite predictable...

y are u stories never with an happy ending?

and yes, rape by someone especially by someone u trust can change ur life...u never really trust a man again..guess its difficult for some men to belive for whom rape is just another way to use women for some minutes of gratification or to 'prove their power'

and men may sleep around with innumerable women, but when it comes to marriage they want virgins. even the so called eductaed men.... double standards...

@ Carolinagal,

I told the concerned people to come back and respond to people but they apparently don't want to or think its petty matter. Guess the discussion ended there. Whether or not he read the messages you guys sent to him..I am not sure!!

@ Shruti,

Hehe! I don't know! You know of any publishers who would like these?

@ Gunj,

Rape in any form is sickening. I liked the way you brought about the situation. It could have been a happily ever after too, with him turning into a monster after marriage. The last para had a real impact

u know sol...u say this is not real..but it happens so much in reality. Blr being the pub-city...so many many gurls go thru this experience. I've heard of stories where the gurls get drugged n the next morning when they wake up they have no idea that they were raped. its a very scary world out there!

the_thinker said...

i feel sorry for the girl. and always we look for reasons to blame the girls. She did not drink to be a rape victim. Even boys do that. Yes getting tipsy is never justified. I would like to know if the boy was brought to book.

go-phish said...

im not gonna comment on if she should have said no earlier or not...thats highly unnecessary..
point is...this does happen...we all have limits..and when people violate us..its violation. period. no questions bout how you dressed or 'lead him on'. well written.

Sometimes these incidents lift heads, and so bad this one. Its better being with an umbrella, as preliminary caution without an idea when does it pours, so as we being aware and away of strangers could avoid from those nasty fellows. Well written!

its sad tht she had to face something like this..but then..wasnt her safety her own responsibility? gettin drunk when thrs no frnd around u...snuggling up wid a person uve barely known for more than an hour...

Intoxication, with no friends around can be dangerous, but what could she do. She was falling for who she thought might be Mr.Right.

Its such a heart wrenching plight many women have been through.

The story is simple, and common. But we need common stories, told time and again, to give us a dose of reality.

Vandita said...

umm she shd have reported and got that paul behind bars...
sad but then i think what ate her up the most was the fact that she cud have prevented it nahi??

jitendra said...

ok before i forget, your current pic is kinda cute.

as for the story, i think the victim needs to share part of the blame. strength of character is needed the most when the temptation is too high. Not that having sex in itself signifies lack of character but making out with someone under the influence of alcohol shows lack of self-control which was a catalyst to the actual rape. Needless to say, Paul cannot be exonerated either.

Thought Provoking Story!!
but how can a girl go alone with someone to whom she even don't know much. Even at the first date and that too in the mid Night.
First date is suppose to know a person and the meeting place shud be some public place!
Most of us attract towards some one having a good physical appearance but to know him/her it takes a lot of talks, a lot of meetings!! there is a protocol for it.
and in public gathering or party one shud drink less as alcohol always slows down our analyzing power.
Overall a good story, which succeed in it's goal to let a lot of people think abt it and let them share abt their views!
